Is Call of Duty: Ghosts worth playing in 2026?

Scores from release, and a separate question about whether a quiet multiplayer is enough for you now.

From my notes. I did not replay the campaign for this page. What I did on 23 October 2026 was put the Wikipedia score table next to the current SteamCharts count and the store prices. The review question and the "is it still active" question are different, and mixing them is how people get a useless answer.

What critics published at launch

Wikipedia's table, which aggregates Metacritic, lists 78 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, 73 for Xbox 360, 71 for PlayStation 3, 69 for Wii U and 68 for PC. IGN's review score was 8.8/10.
Sales were large anyway: Wikipedia reports about $1 billion in first-day retail shipments and more than 19 million copies by February 2014, below Activision's expectation relative to Black Ops II.

Why the reputation soured

The complaints that keep showing up in later discussions are the multiplayer maps, the perk point system, and a campaign that spends a lot of time on set pieces. I am treating those as audience memory, not as a measured study. The map ranking page labels its own list as opinion.
Extinction is the part later players often separate from that argument. If you want co-op rather than a competitive playlist, start at Extinction instead of judging the whole game by Search and Rescue.

A practical 2026 answer

If you want the campaign or Extinction, the game is still for sale on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation at the prices on the download page. If you want populated competitive matches, read the player count first. On 23 October 2026, SteamCharts multiplayer app 209170 showed 38 players; that total does not guarantee a public lobby.
PCGamingWiki warns that online play on several older PC Call of Duty titles, including this era, has known security issues and is highly discouraged. That warning belongs in the buying decision.

Questions

Was Ghosts a sales failure?

No. Wikipedia cites more than 19 million copies by February 2014. It still came in under Activision's Black Ops II comparison.

Did critics hate it?

Metacritic was mixed-to-positive, not a pan. The harsher reputation came later, especially around multiplayer.

Should I buy it in 2026?

Buy it for the campaign or Extinction. Do not buy it on the assumption that public matchmaking is busy.
